The Prophet \ufdfa said: \"Any Muslim who clothes another Muslim who is naked [or in need], Allah will clothe him with the green garments of Paradise. Any Muslim who feeds a Muslim who is hungry, Allah will feed him from the fruits of Paradise, and any Muslim who gives drink to a Muslim who is thirsty, Allah will give him a drink from the Sealed Nectar\" Narrated by Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi<\/a> its chain graded acceptable (hasan) by some scholars<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"and charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire.\"\nNarrated by Al-Tirmidhi<\/a> who graded it as \"hasan sahih\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He (peace be upon him) also urged giving even a little, for it is a shield from the Fire no matter how small:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date.\"\nAgreed upon (narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If half a date is a shield, then what of one who clothes an entire family with usable garments? The Quran also makes clear that giving charity to the poor expiates sins. He says (meaning):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"But if you conceal it and give it to the poor, that is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds.\"\nQuran - Surah Al-Baqarah: 271<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gift that covers dignity before the body<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The value of clothing the needy does not stop at covering the body; it extends to covering the soul and preserving a person's honour. That is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) specified clothing someone \"when he is naked\" \u00e2\u20ac\u201d at the very point of true need. When your clothes reach a person in need in a gracious way that does not wound their feelings, you gain a double reward: the reward of giving, and the reward of protecting dignity. This is the essence of organised charity today: that good reaches the deserving with discretion and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
