Its reward is immense, for the recompense matches the deed: whoever clothes a person in need, Allah clothes them; whoever feeds them, Allah feeds them. Charity in general erases sins, shields from the Fire, and is multiplied in reward. When you donate your clothes to someone in need, you combine reward, covering a person, and protecting their dignity.

How many garments sit in your wardrobe unworn, while for someone else they would mean cover, warmth and dignity? In Islam, surplus clothing is not seen as waste but as an opportunity for great reward. This article explores the reward of donating clothes as found in the Quran and the Sunnah, and how to make your donation an accepted charity, God willing.

Charity in Islam: an act of worship that Allah multiplies

Allah has made spending on those in need among the most beloved of deeds, promising a reward multiplied beyond counting. Islam also ties this giving to sincere love, so it is not merely cast-off scraps but something you yourself value. He says (meaning):

"You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love. And whatever you spend, Allah is fully aware of it."
"Quran" Surah Aal Imran: 92

This applies perfectly to clothing: donate the good, clean piece that you would be happy to see your dearest wear.

The special virtue of clothing the needy

Clothing holds a special place among the avenues of charity, because it covers, protects dignity, and shields from cold and heat. A comprehensive hadith on its virtue is narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

The Prophet ﷺ said: "Any Muslim who clothes another Muslim who is naked [or in need], Allah will clothe him with the green garments of Paradise. Any Muslim who feeds a Muslim who is hungry, Allah will feed him from the fruits of Paradise, and any Muslim who gives drink to a Muslim who is thirsty, Allah will give him a drink from the Sealed Nectar" Narrated by Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi its chain graded acceptable (hasan) by some scholars

Reflect on the great principle here: Reflect on the great principle here: Whoever meets a person's need with clothing in this world, Allah rewards by clothing them from the garments of Paradise. It is a transaction with the Most Generous, with whom not an atom's weight is lost.

Charity erases sins and shields from the Fire

Among the greatest fruits of charity is that it is a cause for the expiation of sins. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, in the hadith of Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him):

"and charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire."
Narrated by Al-Tirmidhi who graded it as "hasan sahih"

He (peace be upon him) also urged giving even a little, for it is a shield from the Fire no matter how small:

"Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date."
Agreed upon (narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

If half a date is a shield, then what of one who clothes an entire family with usable garments? The Quran also makes clear that giving charity to the poor expiates sins. He says (meaning):

"But if you conceal it and give it to the poor, that is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds."
Quran - Surah Al-Baqarah: 271

A gift that covers dignity before the body

The value of clothing the needy does not stop at covering the body; it extends to covering the soul and preserving a person's honour. That is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) specified clothing someone "when he is naked" — at the very point of true need. When your clothes reach a person in need in a gracious way that does not wound their feelings, you gain a double reward: the reward of giving, and the reward of protecting dignity. This is the essence of organised charity today: that good reaches the deserving with discretion and respect.

How to make your clothing donation an accepted charity

So that your donation's reward is magnified, God willing, take care of the following:

Sincere intention for Allah: let your aim be pure for god, for deeds are by intentions.

Choose the good: donate a clean, usable piece as you would like to be clothed yourself, not the torn or worn out.

From lawful earnings: charity from pure wealth is closer to acceptance.

Preserve the recipient's dignity: choose a means of delivery that respects their feelings.

Deal with a trustworthy body: so your donation truly reaches those who deserve it.

The charitable sector in Saudi Arabia today is organised and trustworthy, overseen by the National Center for the Development of the Non-Profit Sector, giving you confidence that your charity arrives honestly.

Turn intention into action today

The greatest resolve is the one that turns into action. Right now, in your wardrobe, lies an opportunity for reward awaiting a single step. With an initiative like Sutra, donating has never been easier: you gather your usable clothes, book a slot, and a representative collects them free of charge from your doorstep, after which they reach those in need in a way that protects their dignity — exactly as Islam loves the poor to be given, with discretion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the reward of donating clothes in Islam?

Donating clothes is a charity whose reward Allah multiplies and which expiates sins.
